This pattern also was found on a cylindrical ceramic stamp in the region of Mexico City. (above, from "Design Motifs of Ancient Mexico", by Jorge Enciso, page 23) It is very similar in the two examples from completely different areas and applications, suggesting that there was a good deal of cultural exchange between North and South America during ancient times.
