These two designs come from cylindrical ceramic stamps found in the State of Guerrero, Mexico. (above, from "Design Motifs of Ancient Mexico", by Jorge Enciso, page 29) The top pattern features stepped lines and geometric spirals, making it completely typical of Pre-Colombian pattern making. The bottom design cleverly creates "step shapes", using the negative spaces left between the separated sections of line.
