This Japanese pattern was taken from an Ukiyo-e woodblock print made from a painting by the artist Torii Kiyonaga in 1783. It is entitled
"A Lady With Two Servants". (above-right, collection of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Bigelow Collection, "Japanese Color Prints", pg. 39, by J. Hillier, Phaidon)
At the height of Ukiyo-e print making, the process involved many different steps done by specialized artists and resulted in an entirely precise and colorful wood-block print. Koniyaga would have created the original drawing or painting used by the wood-block artisans as they translated the image into the block and print.
